How-To Unzip Files Using 7-Zip File Manager

Certain binary file types are not supported for analysis until decompressed. For example, a .zip file will raise the following error when uploaded for analysis:

If you encounter this, refer to the following instructions on decompressing and uploading these file types for analysis.

The following file types are compressed:

  • .upn
  • .bin
  • .zip
  • .rar
  • .tar

The user must first install a file decompression utility on their device to upload these file types.

There are some popular, free, and open-source file archivers available (ObjectSecurity is not endorsing any of these tools, nor do we receive any form of benefit from you using these tools.):

PC and Mac compatible options:
7-Zip File Manager – 7-Zip File Manager | download
WinRAR – WinRAR | download

Also available for Mac users is the built-in Archive Utility

For this tutorial, we will be showing how to decompress files using 7-Zip File Manager. However, the process is the same for all tools above.

1. Once installed, open 7-Zip File Manager.

2. Within the 7-Zip File Manager, navigate to the location of the compressed binary file. In this example, we are uploading the contents of uconnect.upn for analysis. Once found, double-click the file to unpack.

3. Once unpacked, the file contents will be visible within the active directory. From here, locate the file contents you want to run binary analysis on, select all of the associated files, and right-click.

4. Choose the “Copy To…” option.

5. Choose the location where you would like to copy the files and hit “OK.”

6. Now, navigate to ObjectSecurity’s BinLens™ (formerly ObjectSecurity OT.AI Platform) and select “Upload Files” on the binary upload prompt. Select your files from the location you chose to copy and upload the binary files.
