Petaluma, CA / San Diego, CA – December 12, 2024 – ObjectSecurity LLC, a leading provider of advanced vulnerability detection for defense and critical infrastructure, and VenTek International, a premier supplier of unattended automated payment systems for parking, parks and recreation, and city transit corridors, announced the successful application of ObjectSecurity’s BinLens™ 3.0 to analyze and strengthen the security of VenTek’s ticketing kiosk software.
While VenTek fully complies with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), which specifies requirements for protecting cardholder data and systems security, the use of BinLens’ advanced binary vulnerability analysis adds an additional proactive measure that extends beyond VenTek’s existing PCI compliance. By employing BinLens’ state-of-the-art analytics, VenTek now provides an even higher level of data security for its clients.
“By leveraging ObjectSecurity’s BinLens, VenTek demonstrates its commitment to maintaining the highest security standards across our product line, ensuring reliable and secure operations for our clients and system users,” said Gary Catt, CEO of VenTek International. “BinLens bridges critical gaps in the traditional application of cybersecurity measures by automating the typically complex and resource-intensive process of analyzing binary software programs.”
VenTek used BinLens’ automated platform to analyze its kiosk software’s underlying binary components and with this in-depth analysis collaborated with ObjectSecurity’s red team to evaluate any potential vulnerabilities. As part of this exercise ObjectSecurity conducted tests on the software’s Java bytecode using a BinLens beta feature, slated for public release in Q3 2025.
“ObjectSecurity’s latest BinLens version provides organizations with unparalleled insights into vulnerabilities, significantly reducing the need for human intervention. This enables faster, more efficient mitigation of potential threats.”, said Dr. Ulrich Lang, CEO of ObjectSecurity, and added: “Power users such as test labs and red teams rely on BinLens for its advanced detection capabilities and streamlined workflows. Moreover, its automation and low noise levels make advanced binary vulnerability analysis accessible to organizations that previously had not considered incorporating such analysis into their processes. Our work with VenTek highlights the importance of performing robust vulnerability assessments to protect companies and consumers from emerging threats against their sensitive systems and data.”
“BinLens employs a groundbreaking approach utilizing automated symbolic execution to identify hidden and unpublished vulnerabilities in binary programs. BinLens detects memory-safety violations and other forms of undefined behavior. Its high accuracy and low false-positive rate distinguish it from traditional tools and approaches, which often fall short in protecting modern IT/OT/ICS software and devices. For instance, SBOM generation is limited to identifying only known vulnerabilities in published software. Source code analysis and static application security testing (SAST) frequently generate excessive false positives, hindering remediation efforts. Similarly, network scanning proves ineffective for devices that are not network-connected.”, Trevor Thomas, lead developer for BinLens, explained.
The application of ObjectSecurity BinLens to VenTek’s software highlights the critical need for binary vulnerability analysis, particularly for embedded systems that often operate unsupervised and without direct network connections, rendering traditional cybersecurity measures insufficient. BinLens addresses this challenge by automating the complex, time-consuming, and skill-intensive analysis of device software binaries – without requiring access to its originating source code. Thanks to its unique automated advanced symbolic binary-level analysis, BinLens can detect unpublished, potential zero-day vulnerabilities with cutting-edge precision and a low false-positive rate. This proactive approach ensures that devices remain protected against emerging threats, safeguarding operators and end-users alike.
