ObjectSecurity, an information security leader with a strong track record in the traffic management sector, and the company driving model-driven security policy automation globally, today announced that they have today started a 30-month research contract in the area of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The project is titled “Intelligent Cooperative Sensing for Improved traffic efficiency” (“ICSI”). ObjectSecurity will receive approx. EUR320k (US$410k) from an overall EUR4.5m (US$5.7m) project budget part-funded by the European Commission (FP7-ICT-2011-8). ObjectSecurity will collaborate with a 10-organization consortium (INTECS Informatica e Tecnologia del Software S.p.A., Brisa Inovação e Tecnologia, Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Telecomunicazioni, National Research Council of Italy – Institute of Information Science and Technologies (CNR-ISTI), University of Deusto, Forthnet S.A., Faculty of Traffic and Transport Sciences, University of Zagreb, Ikusi – Angel Iglesias S.A., Instituto de Telecomunicações, and ObjectSecurity Ltd.)

The ICSI project tackles the problem that the current ICT infrastructure for supporting Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) does not scale, is not flexible in supporting an incremental growth or changes of the ITS, and exhibits latency and security issues.

ICSI changes that with an architecture where the intelligence for sensing and actuation is distributed over some of the elements, which host a software platform for running ITS applications. Communication with the remote centre happens only for the transmission of aggregated data. The approach proposed in ICSE enables scientific and technological innovations, including advanced sensing algorithms and efficient distribution of context-rich data. Research challenges are associated at all levels to the realization of the system are fully addressed in the project activities. Prototypes of sensors, road-side units, and communication will be developed and integrated into an end-to-end demonstrator, which will be used in on-field experiments for the use cases of smart urban traffic management and accident recovery in highway.
